Denpasar, CNN Indonesia - The Commodity Futures Trading Supervisory Agency (Bappebti) noted that national tin exports fell by 10,000 tons from 39 thousand metric tons in the first half of 2015 to just 29 thousand metric tons in the same period this year.
Head of Bappebti Bachrul Chairi revealed, the decline in exports due to the presence of new players, namely Myanmar, since two years ago. The presence of these new sources, has an impact on the number of Indonesian tin exports.
"This 2016 Myanmar factor still exists, as they are just entering. This is one of the factors, namely the new source, "said Bachrul in Bali, Monday (19/9).
Nevertheless, Bachrul ensures Indonesia is still the largest tin export country to date. This is inseparable from the potential of tin production is still very high, making Indonesia a second tin producer in the world.
For information, about 80 percent of the world's need for tin is tin from Indonesia. "Because the supply of 70-80 percent of the world's tin is Indonesia. They are looking for direct suppliers, namely us, Indonesia, "he explained.
However, Bachrul warned, the supply of tin in Indonesia will likely run out in the next 10 to 15 years. That means, the government only has the longest time in 2031 in developing this tin commodity.
Until now, the mining area is still in Bangka Belitung. Local Government (Pemda) is encouraged to start thinking about countering the reclamation of the former mining land.
"After that, it must be prepared whether the mine will be left out or developed into tourism or manufacturing. So, 15 years is the time for the local government to think for what area, "added Bachrul.
He will not dismiss if in the next 15 years, Indonesia will begin to import to meet the needs of tin in the country. However, as long as you know, the needs of domestic own according to him is still relatively small, ie only five percent of the total production.
Separately, University of Indonesia economist Faisal Basri added that the government should utilize the current amount of tin as well as possible. He warned, not to violate the government regulations in exporting raw materials from these commodities.
"Therefore, in my opinion, we use the best. Do not let tin is tin ore (tin sand) exported. So, 15 years into the future it's higher value added, "he said.
That way, Indonesia will have significant relics and later can be processed, so the selling price can be higher. Moreover, if the tin processing plant develops in Indonesia, it helps the production of raw materials from the tin itself.
Currently, the export of tin itself is already in the form of tin ingot. He himself hopes that Indonesia will no longer export raw materials and import finished goods whose raw materials come from tin.
"Kan imported from abroad. The tin is sold and processed by Japan and Korea, imported to Indonesia. So missing middle, "explained Faisal.
For your information, overseas tin sales or tin exports are currently being done through futures exchanges in Indonesia managed by Indonesia Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (ICDX) since 2013. (beer / gen)
